Örnek 1:

Why You Should Not Smoke

I am sure that you know that smoking harms your body. Then why do you continue smoking? Maybe you do it because you haven’t really become conscious about all the effects that smoking has. There are a lot of reasons why you shouldn’t smoke. Some of them are that smoking affects your health, that you spend a lot of money on cigarettes, and that when you smoke you are not respecting people around you.

The first reason why you shouldn’t smoke is that smoking affects your health. If you smoke, your physical condition will be negatively affected, so it will be very difficult for you to succeed in sports. Also, smoking produces lethal diseases like cancer and reduces the length and quality of your life. Maybe you don’t notice all the physical effects of smoking immediately, but you surely will be sorry one day.

The second reason why you shouldn’t smoke is because of all the money that you spend on it. Maybe you start smoking only when someone offers you a cigarette, but there will be a day when you will feel the need of a cigarette. By this time, you will pay whatever to smoke, and each time you will smoke more, so you will spend more money. All the money you would spend on cigars could have be spent in something better, don’t you think?

The last reason why you shouldn’t smoke is out of respect for the people around you. When you smoke, you not only harm yourself, but you also harm all the people around you. So you mustn’t be selfish; you should at least avoid smoking in front of people who don’t smoke. Also, many people don’t like the cigarette’s smell, so they won’t enjoy your company. Would you like that?

I have said just some reasons of why you shouldn’t smoke, so I hope that now those of you who smoke are able to think a little and try to make a smart decision. In addition to all the reasons I’ve said, I would like you to think about how much you love yourself and then whether you want to continue harming yourself. Think also about all the people who love you, like your family who doesn’t want to see you suffering or sick. If you decide to continue smoking, what a pity. But if you decide to stop smoking, congratulations! Remember that “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

Örnek 2:

In the past, I have never been inclined to participate in sports. Honestly, I didn’t like it, but many persons whom I lived with kept telling me everyday how good it was. Since the peer pressure was growing, I decided to go to the gym. It wasn’t until then that I could really understand people when they said exercise really helped a person get organized and keep yourself in a healthy physically and mentally.

For starters, when you are a lazy person, it is difficult to take the first step, but it is all a matter of committing yourself to something that will provide you a lot of positive feedback. Once you start doing exercise and observing positive results, you actually enjoy it. It takes a lot of effort and strong will, but it’s worth it. The principal thing to do is to participate in an activity you like. If you do you’ll start organizing your day in a way that enables you to do everything you have to, including exercising. You will no longer be a person stressed-out without time to carry on with all your activities.

Second, it is obvious that once you exercise you will have a better condition. You will be healthier in a physical way. It is probable that you will lose weight and your muscles will get stronger and stronger. Your body will feel good, full of energy and it will respond immediately to any action you want to do, any activity that has to be done with high spirits.

The third reason why exercising is good is that it affects you positively in a mental and psychological way. Doing exercise helps you set specific goals which along with strong will can be achieved. When you do that, you are aware of your abilities, accept your weaknesses, and your self-esteem goes up. Any sport distracts you because it helps you not to think about school, friends, problems, among other things. It brings you time to think about yourself and no one else. It helps you keep your mind busy and to avoid dangerous habits like drugs.

Doing exercise is very important to any person of any age. The positive effects of exercising, which I’ve already mentioned, are like a chain. Once you do a sports activity that you like, you get organized; therefore, you start doing things the right way and get enormous benefits which make you feel good as a whole human being. You start living your life happily.

Persuasive writing attempts to convince the reader that the point of view or course of action recommended by the writer is valid. To accomplish this, the writer must develop a limited topic which is well defined and debatable, that is has more than one side. It is important that the author understand other sides of the position so that the strongest information to counter the others can be presented. In the essay, only one side of the issue is presented.

Like all kinds of five paragraph essays, there is a specific format to be followed.

* The topic sentence cannot be a fact as facts cannot be debated. It should be a statement of position. That position must be clear and direct. This statement directs the readers to follow along with your logic towards the specific stated conclusion that you want them to support. Do not make it personal so do not use personal pronouns. Make it definitive.

* Then, in the same introductory paragraph, state the three best reasons that you have to support your position as the remainder of the opening paragraph. These reasons become the topics of each of the three supporting paragraphs. Again, be sure they are able to be supported with additional separate facts.

* In the body of the essay, the writer uses specific evidence, examples, and statistics and not broad generalizations or personal opinions to persuade the reader that the stated position is a valid one. Each topic sentence for the support paragraphs have been introduced in the beginning paragraph. Each additional sentence must closely relate to the topic and the sentence that came before it. This way, the logic of the argument is easy to follow.

* Be sure to use adequate transitions between paragraphs as they make it easy for the reader to follow the logic of the presentation.

* As one closes the essay, it is most important to to clearly redefine the topic and restate the most compelling evidence cited in original form. Remember, this is the last chance to remind the reader and convince him/her to accept the writer’s position.

* Do not introduce new material in the conclusion.

The guidelines for writing persuasively:

* When deciding how to begin, always consider the audience. Remember, you are addressing an audience whose views may differ from yours.

* Your first concern is to get your audiences to “listen.” You might use humor, a rhetorical question, an anecdote or any other attention-getting device to accomplish this.

* However you begin, you need to concisely state your purpose for writing. Develop your position, or thesis statement. This will help you to focus on your issue as you draft your essay.

* You need to support your position with valid evidence and logical arguments. For evidence, you might use any combination of facts, statistics, expert opinions, and reasons and make responsible appeals to emotion.

* Anticipate opposing arguments.

* End with the re-emphasis of your strong points and in a way that prompts your audience to change their thinking or to take a certain course of action.

Aşağıdaki essay genel yazma prensipleri için örnek teşkil etmektedir. Farklı bölümler işaretlenmiştir. Tez ifadesi koyu ve pembe renkte belirtilmiştir. Konuyu belirten cümle italic yazılmıştır ve her temel noktanın altı çizilidir. Kendi essayinizi yazarken (sizden istenmediği sürece) böyle yapmanıza tabii ki gerek yok. Burda yapılan vurgulamaların amacı size essay yazma ipuçlarını aktarmaktır.

“A dog is man’s best friend.” That common saying may contain some truth, but dogs are not the only animal friend whose companionship people enjoy. For many people, a cat is their best friend. Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make excellent housepets.

In the first place, people enjoy the companionship of cats. Many cats are affectionate. They will snuggle up and ask to be petted, or scratched under the chin. Who can resist a purring cat? If they’re not feeling affectionate, cats are generally quite playful. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything dangling from a string. They especially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the game. Contrary to popular opinion, cats can be trained. Using rewards and punishments, just like with a dog, a cat can be trained to avoid unwanted behavior or perform tricks. Cats will even fetch!

In the second place, cats are civilized members of the household. Unlike dogs, cats do not bark or make other loud noises. Most cats don’t even meow very often. They generally lead a quiet existence. Cats also don’t often have “accidents.” Mother cats train their kittens to use the litter box, and most cats will use it without fail from that time on. Even stray cats usually understand the concept when shown the box and will use it regularly. Cats do have claws, and owners must make provision for this. A tall scratching post in a favorite cat area of the house will often keep the cat c0ntent to leave the furniture alone. As a last resort, of course, cats can be declawed.

Lastly, one of the most attractive features of cats as housepets is their ease of care. Cats do not have to be walked. They get plenty of exercise in the house as they play, and they do their business in the litter box. Cleaning a litter box is a quick, painless procedure. Cats also take care of their own grooming. Bathing a cat is almost never necessary because under ordinary circumstances cats clean themselves. Cats are more particular about personal cleanliness than people are. In addition, cats can be left home alone for a few hours without fear. Unlike some pets, most cats will not destroy the furnishings when left alone. They are c0ntent to go about their usual activities until their owners return.

Cats are low maintenance, civilized companions. People who have small living quarters or less time for pet care should appreciate these characteristics of cats. However, many people who have plenty of space and time still opt to have a cat because they love the cat personality. In many ways, cats are the ideal housepet.

Essay writing is both an art and a science. It is an art in that the writer must come up with a good idea, put thought behind it, choose provocative words and entertain while informing the reader. Good essays take a fair amount of creativity and style, and many of them even successfully tweak the science part of it without doing any harm. However, there is a basic science to writing a successful essay that flows, and all good essayists, from E.B. White to Joan Didion, had the science down before they were able to creatively manipulate it.

Good essays are comprised of sentences that are arranged in a certain logical manner. For writing to flow best, it contains some kind of arguement, whether implied or stated outrightly. An arguement by definition is logical, so for beginning essay writers, it is crucial to practice writing logical arguements.

By “argument” we mean the point one is trying to express: it could be something like, “I support a certain political view,” or on the other hand, it could be something like, “snowy days make me feel sentimental”. Both are arguements which contain an implicit logic, and to express this logic, an essay should flow in a certain proscribed way.

First, introduce your subject. An introduction should be provocative, containing a sentence or two about the subject. For beginning essayists, it’s best to learn to draw before you learn to paint; therefore, the introduction might be a single paragraph that segues into the thesis. In an introductory paragraph, one might describe the relevance of the essay being written, why you are writing it, and why you value to subject at hand. Or, if you are writing about snowy days, it might simply be a description of a snowy day.

Secondly, write a thesis paragraph for the entire essay. The thesis is the point you are trying to get across. After describing a snowy day in your introduction, your thesis sentence or paragraph might be something like: “Days like this make me feel sentimental.” The rest of the essay will substantiate this thesis.

Thirdly, structure each of your paragraphs around a subpoint. Your subpoints serve your thesis. So in our imaginary essay, a subpoint might be: “Snowy days remind me of playing in the snow as a child.” Structure a paragraph around that sentence; every sentence in the paragraph should have something to do with that sentence. You might describe building a snowman with your dad, finding a carrot for the nose, watching it melt with sorrow as summer approached. Scratch out any sentence in that paragraph that doesn’t apply to remembering how you played in the snow as a child. Your next paragraph might be centered around the sentence: “Snowy days make me think of Christmas.” All the sentences in the subsequent paragraph will substantiate this idea, and so on.

So, once you write an intoruction, a thesis, and paragraphs centered around subpoints which support the thesis, your outline will look like this:

1st paragraph–Introduction: Description of a snowy day

2nd paragraph–Thesis: Snowy days make me feel sentimental

3rd paragraph–Subpoint 1: Snowy days remind me of playing in the snow as a child.

4th paragraph–Subpoint 2: Snowy days remind me of Christmas…

etc.

Once you have written three or more supporting paragraphs, it is time to write a conclusion. This may be where you drive your point home, telling us precisely why playing in the snow, Christmas, etc., all make you feel sentimental.

Upon writing the conclusion, you have produced a successful essay that is guaranteed to flow. It will flow because it is logical; it isn’t necessary to be a great writer or to come up with impressive words.

When you are writing an essay, the first step is to choose a topic and determine what direction or point of view you will take. Your essay may try to persuade the reader to share your view on the topic, it may try to explain to the reader how to complete a particular task, or it may try to inform or educate the reader on a particular topic.

Every good essay will follow the following outline:

1. Outline of your topic

2. Introduction

3. Thesis

4. Body (Usually 3-6 Paragraphs)

5. Conclusion

OUTLINE

To create your outline, list the topic you have chosen as item 1. Under item 1, list three to six main ideas about your topic, list these as A, B, C, and so on. You will use your outline to construct your essay’s paragraphs. Your outline may look similar to this one:

1. Topic Idea

A. This idea about topic

B. This fact about topic

C. This information about topic

Introduction/Thesis

The first paragraph consists of the introduction and a thesis statement. The introduction should attract the reader’s attention and give the reader an idea of the essay’s focus. You may begin with an attention grabber such as intriguing information, captivating dialogue or a startling fact.

Start with a few sentences, explaining your topic in general terms and lead into your thesis statement. Each sentence of your opening statement should become a bit more specific, until you reach your thesis.

The thesis statement tells the reader what the essay will be about, and what points you will be making in your essay. In your thesis, you should state the topic of the essay and state the point of the essay or the main ideas on your topic that you determined in your outline.

BODY PARAGRAGHS

The body paragraphs will describe and explain your essay topic. Each of the main ideas that you listed in your outline will become a paragraph in your essay. If you had three main ideas, you will have three body paragraphs.

Start by writing down one of your main ideas, in sentence form. In three to five sentences, explain your views or the facts surrounding this main idea. Go on to the next main idea, which will form paragraph 2, and follow the same steps until each main idea has been turned into a paragraph.

Conclusion

The conclusion brings closure to the reader. Three or four sentences are all that is needed to write a conclusion. You may use your conclusion to sum up the points of your essay, to provide a final perspective on your topic or to simply review the main points.
